From zero to your first job

The path I'd take today to get into tech, in the order things build on each other.

1. 01
Logic and a first language0/4Start with JavaScript: it runs in the browser, needs no install, and it's the same language as the frontend and plenty of backends.

   • Variables, conditions and loops›
   • Functions›
   • Arrays and objects›
2. 02
How the web works0/5Before any framework, understand what happens when you type an address and hit enter.

   • HTTP and DNS›
   • Semantic HTML›
   • CSS, flexbox and grid›
   • Browser DevTools›
3. 03
Terminal and Git0/4Every team uses Git. Knowing branches and pull requests counts for more in interviews than you'd think.

   • Basic terminal commands›
   • Commit, branch and merge›
   • Pull requests and code review›
4. 04
Databases0/4Almost every system stores data. SQL is one of the longest-lasting skills in a career.

   • SELECT, WHERE and JOIN›
   • Table modelling›
   • ORMs and SQL›
5. 05
Backend with Node.js0/4A server that receives a request, validates it, talks to the database and responds. That's most of backend work.

   • REST APIs›
   • Input validation›
   • Authentication›
6. 06
Frontend with React0/4Components, state and data from your own API. With that you can finish a whole system.

   • Components and state›
   • Fetching data from an API›
   • Forms›
7. 07
Real projects0/4I started by building websites for people around me. A project with real users teaches more than ten tutorials.

   • Solve someone's problem›
   • From start to deploy›
   • A README that explains why›

The first job0/4My first tech job was IT support, and that's where I learned how systems break in production. The way in doesn't have to be the dream job.

   • Ways in›
   • A CV with projects›
   • Technical interviews›
